Appraisal Experience

Evaluating Historic & Collector Firearms

Because firearms are often passed down through generations, many collections include antique, historic, or collector firearms that require more detailed evaluation. Factors such as condition, originality, manufacturer markings, production variations, historical significance, and current collector demand can all influence value.

CGS has evaluated collections containing antique revolvers, military surplus rifles, collectible shotguns, discontinued models, and historically significant firearms where proper identification and documentation were especially important.

This experience helps clients better understand not just what a firearm may be worth, but why certain pieces may carry additional collector, historical, or market value.

Choosing the Right Appraisal Method

Many firearm appraisals can be completed remotely using photos and details. For larger or antique collections—or for clients who prefer not to handle firearms themselves—we may recommend an in-home appraisal depending on the collection, location, and availability.

Online Appraisals

  • Completed using photos and firearm details
  • Convenient for most situations
  • Faster turnaround

In-Home Appraisals

  • May be recommended for larger or antique collections
  • On-site evaluation at your home or property
  • Available throughout Southern California based on location and scheduling
Not sure which option is best? We’ll guide you through the process and recommend the most appropriate approach for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to bring the firearms to you for an appraisal?

No. For your safety, we do not recommend transporting unfamiliar firearms yourself. In California, transporting firearms legally generally requires they be unloaded and transported in a locked container. If you are unfamiliar with the firearms, it is best to work with a qualified firearms professional.

Solution: California Gun Services can provide an online gun appraisal using clear photos of the firearms, or we can come to you in Orange County and provide an on-site gun appraisal.

What information do you need for an online gun appraisal?

Typically, we'll request clear photos of each firearm in the collection. Specifcally, we will need pictures of the following for each piece:

  • Serial number
  • Markings
  • Overall condition

Do you appraise antique guns?

Yes. Many of the firearm collections we appraise include antique, historic, or collectible firearms that have remained in families for generations.

Can accessories increase firearm value?

No, we typically do not include accessories in the appraisal value. This includes accessories such as slings, scopes, gun cases, holsters, and similar items.

Our appraisals are primarily based on the firearm itself and current market value research for that make and model.
