How to Dispose of a Gun Legally

In California, arrange a lawful transfer through a licensed firearms dealer or contact local law enforcement about surrender. The right option depends on the firearm and your circumstances. Don’t throw guns in the trash or leave them somewhere for another person to find.

Want Pickup at Your Home?

Contact CGS about disposal of unwanted firearms. Tell us your city, what you know about the guns, and whether you want permanent destruction. We’ll discuss eligibility, paperwork, and pickup before scheduling.

Considering Another Option?

A licensed dealer can discuss selling eligible firearms. Your local police or sheriff’s department can explain its surrender procedure. Call the agency first and follow its instructions before moving or bringing in a firearm.

California DOJ explains the general dealer requirements for firearm transfers.

A straightforward process

How Our Gun Disposal Service Works

One call starts the process. We’ll explain what happens next.

  1. Tell Us What You Have

Call with your city and a general description. It’s okay if you don’t know the firearm type.

  2. Arrange Your Pickup

We’ll discuss your situation, explain available options, and find a pickup time that works for you.

  3. We Handle the Details

At your appointment, we check the firearms, complete the required paperwork, and provide an acquisition receipt.

  4. We Remove the Firearms

CGS handles removal and transport. If you arrange destruction, we’ll email proof once it’s complete.

Gun Disposal Questions

A few things to know before arranging your pickup.

Is it illegal to throw a gun away?

Do not put a firearm in the trash. In the City of Los Angeles, improper firearm disposal, including putting one in a public trash receptacle, is expressly a misdemeanor. Elsewhere, applicable state and local laws still matter; arrange lawful transfer or surrender instead.

See Los Angeles Municipal Code § 55.12.1. This city rule should not be treated as a statewide statute.

How can I get rid of a gun legally?

Start by contacting a licensed firearms dealer about a lawful transfer or your local law enforcement agency about surrender. For home pickup in our service area, call CGS to discuss the firearm, required paperwork, and available disposal options.

Is firearm pickup really free?

CGS offers free pickup of unwanted firearms. Tell us your location and what you have so we can confirm the arrangements. Ask separately about permanent destruction and any other requested services.

Do I need to transport the firearms?

No. We arrange pickup at your location and handle removal. If you’re unfamiliar with the firearms, leave them alone and call us before trying to move or unload them.

Will my firearms be destroyed?

Only if destruction is the option arranged with CGS. Explain your wishes before pickup so we can discuss the appropriate service and documentation.

Can you collect ammunition too?

Tell us about any unwanted ammunition when you call. We’ll discuss pickup arrangements along with the firearms.

What if I don’t know what I have?

You can still call. Describe what you know without handling the firearms. Mention any missing paperwork or uncertainty so we can discuss your situation before an appointment.

How soon can you pick them up?

Availability depends on your location and our schedule. Call with your city and preferred timing, and we’ll discuss the next available appointment.

Ready to Arrange Pickup?

Call Jeff or send an email with your city and a brief description of what you need removed.

We’ll confirm the details and help you take the next step.
