Our CGS firearms specialists help Southern California beneficiaries and fiduciaries navigate the process of inheriting guns safely, professionally, and in accordance with the law. We assist with firearm identification and legal classification, certified gun appraisals and estate liquidation. We can also make an offer to purchase individual firearms or entire collections, with immediate payment at the time of pickup.

Common Situations We Help With

Many families and estate professionals reach out to us when they are inheriting firearms in California or discover a gun collection while settling a loved one’s estate and aren’t sure what to do next. Because firearms are regulated assets in California, they must be handled differently than most other personal property. Every estate is different, and we help families and fiduciaries understand their options and decide the best way to handle inherited firearms safely and legally.

Some of the most common situations we help with include:

A fiduciary needs help appraising an estate gun collection for beneficiary distribution.

A beneficiary in California wants to understand their legal options for selling inherited guns.

A surviving spouse has had firearms left behind by a deceased husband for some time and wants them out of the house.

A family discovers guns and ammo during an estate clean-out and wants to know their legal options for getting rid of them.

A trustee or executor needs help determining whether any firearms may be restricted under California law.

Estate & Inherited Firearm Services We Offer

We provide the following services for inherited firearms and estate gun collections throughout Orange County, Los Angeles County, and Southern California.

Inherited Gun Collection Appraisal Services

When inheriting firearms, the first step is typically identifying what guns are in the collection and determining what they’re worth. CGS provides estate and inherited gun collection appraisal services to document and evaluate firearms during estate administration or liquidation.

Our appraisal process typically includes two steps:

Step 1: Inspection & Identification

First, we inspect and identify each firearm in the collection. This can be done from clear photos provided online or through an on-site inspection. We document what items are present and determine how each firearm is classified under California firearm laws, helping clarify the available options for transfer, sale, or disposal.

Certified Firearm Appraisers

CGS appraisers are AGI Certified Firearm Appraisers trained in firearm identification and professional valuation.

Step 2: Appraisal & Market Valuation

Next, we determine the fair market value of each firearm in the collection. Our estate and inherited gun collection appraisals include research into recent auction sales and comparable firearms to establish accurate valuations. Each appraisal documents key firearm details such as make, model, serial number, caliber, age, and historical significance, along with the estimated value of each item.

Firearm Liquidation Services

After identifying and appraising the firearms in a collection, many families decide to sell some or all of the inherited guns. In California, all gun sales generally must go through a licensed California firearms dealer. CGS can assist with:

Consignment sales for individual firearms or entire collections

Placement in online or live firearm auctions depending on the piece

Firearm shipments to buyers

Estate Firearms & Related Items We Can Assist With

Estates often include more than just firearms. Ammunition, reloading components, and other related items may also need to be safely handled during estate administration. As a licensed California firearms dealer (FFL) with certified firearm appraisers, CGS can legally assist with many of the firearms and related items commonly found in estates and inherited collections.

We regularly help beneficiaries, trustees, and estate administrators identify, appraise, transfer, sell, or safely dispose of items such as:

Gun Collections of Any Size

Antique or Historic Firearms

Ammunition (including live, unstable or inert rounds)

Items We Cannot Handle

Certain weapons and devices fall outside the scope of services that a licensed firearms dealer can legally handle. These include:

  • California prohibited firearms, including certain assault weapons
  • Destructive or explosive devices, such as grenades

Frequently Asked Questions

Description text

What happens if prohibited firearms are found in an estate?

If a California-prohibited firearm or assault weapon is found in an estate, it cannot be sold or transferred. In most cases, the firearm must be surrendered to your local sheriff’s department or law enforcement agency.

Can firearms be sold as part of estate liquidation?

Yes, but not in the same way as other household items. Firearms cannot be sold at an estate sale or transferred privately. Under California law, all firearm sales must be handled through a licensed California firearms dealer (FFL), who will process the legal transfer and background check for the buyer.

What if I want to keep an inherited gun?

If you decide to keep one or several inherited guns, you’ll need to register each firearm with the State of California. You will also need to obtain a Firearm Safety Certificate and complete a firearm transfer from the deceased owner to you as the beneficiary. The transfer process also requires passing a background check. Then you can send your $19 to CA DOJ to process the transfer.
